Building and fostering a marketing culture

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

I remember so many years ago, the general manager at my credit union used to take the time to walk around the office every morning to say hello … good morning … how is your partner … did your kids enjoy…

When he left, there was a void felt by myself and my co-workers. I didn’t realize how valuable that morning routine had become, until it was gone.

The atmosphere at work felt a little 'off' to me. I thought 'what do I have the power to do/ to change?'. So, I started doing something as simple as walking around the office each morning, simply to wish a good morning, ask how they are, what was something awesome that they experienced since yesterday….and do you know what happened? My circle of influence grew and the marketing buy-in elevated (p.s. I was in a marketing, non-leadership role at the time).

Recently I listened to a LinkedIn learning session on marketing culture. I guess I never really thought of what I was doing in those early years as fostering a marketing culture. I just knew that if I wanted to see results of the marketing work I was doing, I had to engage the people who were delivering to the members.

*Digression - A bit of background - I also sat in the seat of the member-facing employee. I remember having a member come in and tell me about an article that had been published in our local paper about my credit union. I knew nothing about it. Ugh. I felt like such a fool. That was not ok.*

I believe that marketing should never be a push or a surprise. It should be a collaboration with the key leaders of the organization (note these people don’t necessarily hold a management title – they can be key influencers).

Once you have your tactics built (with said collaboration) then share it out to all staff. Get them excited. Help them to understand how you got there. Give them tools to achieve their goals leveraging the marketing. Let them be the champions.

You’ll see your marketing go further than you ever could have imagined.

And your circle will grow.

Keep on being amazing,

Lyanne
