The power of your story + brand building

Have you ever been drawn to a post, article, or publication about someone who owns or runs a business? When you need a service do you do an internet search on the company? Do you comb through the website to learn more about who you might be doing business with?

I'm willing to bet that there has been a time or two that most people have done exactly this.

Over my years in marketing, when reviewing website analytics, time and time again the top pages viewed are those where the people who are providing the service, or leading the company, share their story.

When you are marketing for a business or even when you are building your personal brand, it’s important to keep in mind that people seek out human connection. They may need to have their electrical fixed, or have a financial plan reviewed, or even want to go out and try a new place to eat. When they do a search, more than one business can pop up. What can make you or your business stand out, so you are chosen?

The answer lies in the human connection. Who is the human behind the business? How do you connect? One way to do it is by sharing your story.

Here are a few sample questions you can build upon when writing your story that can endear the reader to you. These connect to the heart and mind, both key in decision making (with the heart often leading the way).

  • If you are a small business owner, you may want to share why you are in business, or share what the turning point was that compelled you to take the leap of entrepreneur.

  • If you are providing an intangible service, you may share how you came to be in this role and what gives you the greatest satisfaction in serving your clients.

  • If you are a restaurateur, how do you bring the love of food to every dish you make?

  • What can you share about your professional experiences that could help someone else?

Storytelling is also powerful in building a brand. When you showcase the people that are delivering the product or service, it connects to the heart and shows that this is a real company, doing real things, making a real difference, with and for real people. This heart-mind connection can be the tipping point for someone to choose you/your business over all the others that pop up in the internet search.

If this is something you’ve never done, maybe it’s time to consider how you or your people’s story can make an impact on your personal brand, the goals of the organization, and let’s not forget, the brand of the business you are marketing.
